Stay Tuned for School Psychologist Applications

We are excited to announce that within the state of Illinois, two additional School Based Mental Health Projects have been funded by the US Department of Education to support the continuation of this work focused on expanding and sustaining School Psychologists across  the state to provide mental health services in the schools.

Two New Grant Awards Coming to Illinois!!!

 We are excited to announce that within the state of Illinois, two additional School Based Mental Health Projects have been funded by the US Department of Education to support the continuation of this work focused on expanding and sustaining School Psychologists across  the state to provide mental health services in the schools.  

Tentative Roles & Definitions

School Psychology Mental Health Professional

A School Psychology Mental Health Professional is defined as a professional starting after January 1, 2026 with an Ed. S., or Ph D degree in School Psychology that provides mental health services including direct School-Based Mental Health Interventions.  These professionals must have their Professional Educator License (PEL) or commit to obtaining this within three years of application. 

School Psychology Mental Health Re-Specialization Professional

A School Psychology Mental Health Re-Specialization Professional is defined as a mental health professional enrolling or attending classes after January 1, 2026 that has worked at least one month full-time in a social service or mental health related role prior to starting at a partnering district.  The School Psychologist in training must be completing their practicum or internship hours within a partnering district to provide a comprehensive array of mental health services in schools. These professionals must commit to obtaining their Professional Educator License (PEL) within three years of application. 

School Psychology Mental Health Supervisor

A School Psychology Mental Health Supervisor is defined as a professional meeting the School Psychology Mental Health Professional definition with at least two years of experience and holding a PEL in School Psychology.  Eligible supervisors may also hold a license as a Clinical Psychologist.

School-Psychology Mental Health Mentor

A School Psychology Mental Health Mentor is defined as a professional meeting the School Psychology Mental Health Professional definition with at least one year of experience and willing to mentor a new professional. 

School-Based Mental Health Intervention

School-Based Mental Health Intervention is defined as teaching a skill or skills that are evidence-based, providing additional structure or predictability, must be over time, and must include consistent data collection for progress monitoring 

School-Based Mental Health Service Episode of Care

School-Based Mental Health Service Episode of Care is defined as conducting a comprehensive assessment, providing a mental health diagnosis, creating a treatment plan, and providing direct intervention for students.

Expansion of Mental Health Services

The ISBE School-Based Mental Health Projects and US Department of Education guidelines for this funding opportunity emphasize prioritization of the expansion of mental health service providers across Illinois and within partnering districts. This expansion is emphasized with priority points to increase competitive selection of applicants for these projects.

Addition of a Mental Health Provider Position

25 pts

New School-Based Mental Health Professional position that did not exist prior to 1/1/2026.  This new role will expand the number of positions for mental health providers by one additional provider.

New Provider Filling a New Position

10 pts

New School-Based Mental Health Professional provider in a previous position created after  1/1/2026

New Provider Filling a Previous Position

5 pts

New School-Based Mental Health Professional provider in a previous position created before  1/1/2026


Background Influencing Student Mental Health

The ISBE School-Based Mental Health Projects and US Department of Education guidelines for this funding opportunity emphasize prioritization of specific backgrounds and diversity that increases the odds of students to access, utilize, and benefit from mental health services. These activities are emphasized with priority points to increase competitive selection of applicants for these projects.

Role & Responsibility

Performing Comprehensive Mental Health Services

 Performing mental health services at the top of their license

  •  Includes Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment Plan, and direct Intervention at Tier II and III. 
  • Can do majority of what community mental health agencies could do for students

Performing Direct Mental Health Intervention

10 pts

20+ hours/week of performing direct 1:1 or small group mental health interventions with students


Note: School-Based Mental Health Intervention is defined as teaching a skill or skills that are evidence-based, providing additional structure or predictability, must be over time, and must include consistent data collection for progress monitoring 

Professional Employed by the District

10 pts

 Professional is employed by the school district 

Professionals holds a provisional or full PEL

10 pts

Professionals holds a full or provision Professional Educator License (PEL)
